Sailing around the British Virgin Islands

We've explored many types of water travel over the years—from riverboat cruises to small ship voyages, Antarctic expeditions and sailing through the Galapagos—but island-hopping on a catamaran was a new and wonderful experience for the JACA Travel team.

The British Virgin Islands (BVIs) are breathtaking destinations known for their pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and charming local culture. Plus, they’re a 3 hour flight from Miami or a quick boat ride from the USVIs, making it easily accessible for those in North America. The region offers a variety of unique experiences for travelers, from secluded islands brimming with natural beauty to islands buzzing with nightlife and activities. Whether you're seeking serene beaches, lively bars, or exquisite dining, the BVIs provide a range of options.

Here's a brief overview of the islands we visited and what you can expect at each stop:

Norman Island

Known for its vibrant atmosphere, Norman Island is a top choice for travelers seeking adventure and fun. Start your day with a sunrise hike to take in the stunning views of the surrounding waters. Later, head to the famous floating bar and restaurant, Willy T's, for a lively evening of delicious food and drinks.

Cooper Island

Cooper Island offers a tranquil escape with a touch of luxury. The Cooper Island Beach Club provides a relaxing retreat for visitors, complete with beautiful accommodations and dining options. Make sure to visit the Rum Bar to sample an impressive selection of rums from around the world.

Virgin Gorda

As one of the larger islands in the BVIs, Virgin Gorda is a must-visit. Its most famous attraction, The Baths, features giant granite boulders that create picturesque grottos and pools. Beyond The Baths, enjoy exploring beautiful beaches and hiking trails throughout the island.

Scrub Island

Scrub Island boasts stunning resorts and breathtaking natural beauty. Big Scrub and Little Scrub offer incredible snorkeling opportunities, allowing you to discover vibrant marine life and colorful coral reefs. It's an ideal island for water sports enthusiasts.

Anegada

Anegada is known for its unique landscape and stunning beaches. Explore the island by car to discover gems such as Loblolly Bay and Cow Wreck Beach. With its flat terrain and sparse population, Anegada offers a tranquil and relaxing atmosphere. Or enjoy a Lobster feast and live music at Potter’s.

Jost Van Dyke

For a laid-back island experience, visit Jost Van Dyke. Explore the natural wonder of the Bubbly Pool, a unique rock formation where seawater creates bubbling pools. Don’t miss a visit to the iconic Foxy's for good food, drinks, and live music.

Peter Island

If you're seeking a peaceful retreat, Peter Island is an excellent choice. This private island is known for its serene ambiance and natural beauty, providing a chance to unwind among lush landscapes and stunning beaches.

If you worry about seasickness, the close proximity of the islands can be reassuring. Most travel between islands happens during the day, with journeys typically lasting less than two hours on open water. While weather and wave conditions can vary, the islands are generally close together, and the bright bays help to shield against strong waves at night. In fact, you might find the gentle rocking of the boat soothing enough to lull you to sleep.

For those interested in embarking on a similar trip, we highly recommend our partner, The Moorings. With a vast fleet of yachts, catamarans, and sailboats spanning the Caribbean and Mediterranean, they offer quality service and a luxurious experience at a reasonable price. As a JACA client, you’ll also get extra amenities and best available rates. Contact us here for more information on booking.

Sailing through the British Virgin Islands is an unforgettable adventure that caters to a variety of interests. Whether you're drawn to adventure, relaxation, or a bit of both, the BVIs offer a diverse range of experiences. With the help of a reputable charter service, you can enjoy the beauty and luxury of these islands in style.

xx,

Alex
